Although you may not recognize her Frances Hodgson Burnett was an established American novelist and dramatist, as well as a wife and the mother of two young boys, when she began to write for children. Her first stories appeared in St. Nicholas magazine, but it was Little Lord Fauntleroy , written for her boys, that cemented her international reputation as a children’s writer. Frances Hodgson Burnett (November 24, 1849 – October 29, 1924) was born in Cheetham, England. She emigrated to the U.S. with her mother and siblings when she was in her teens, and started publishing stories in magazines to help support her family.
Frances Hodgson Burnett was a remarkable human being, and a biography of her should be read, since for the last fifty years or so, we have been assured by academics, psychologists and self-appointed pseudo-intellectuals that humans cannot possibly be what she in fact was. Frances, known for The World Made Straight & Nubbin & Friends, joined the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain at the age of 17 and then subsequently trained for 3 years at LAMDA. She has had a varied career in theatre, film and television, and has worked regularly in the UK, USA and Germany.

Frances Hodgson Burnett was born in 1849 in Manchester England to parents Eliza and Edwin Hodgson. Her father owned a shop that supplied brasses, chandeliers, door handles, ironworks for the aristocracy also known as Cotton. He died in 1854 from stroke leaving Frances’ mother to manage the shop on her own.
Her father was a successful ironmonger originally from Doncaster, and his income was sufficient to enable the family to live a comfortable life.
